Wales and Borders Rail Franchise

MTR has a dedicated, talented and innovative team in MTR Cymru Ltd and its Cardiff-based delivery partner BAM Nuttall Ltd who together have submitted exciting and ambitious proposals to the Welsh Government’s expert body, Transport for Wales, for the contract to run the Wales and Borders Rail Service and South Wales Metro from October 2018 for a period of 15 years.

The Welsh Government will announce the successful bidder for the new Wales and Borders Rail Service and South Wales Metro in Spring 2018.

MTR Cymru knows how vital this once-in-a-generation opportunity will be in transforming people's everyday lives in Wales and the border counties of England, catalysing balanced economic growth right across Wales, boosting national pride and confidence, and fostering a transition to sustainable lifestyles for future generations to come.  MTR and BAM Nuttall fully support the Welsh Government’s vision for:

We believe that creating an effective, integrated transport network will enhance the social and economic prospects for the whole of Wales, connecting people, communities and businesses to jobs, facilities, services and markets in an affordable and sustainable way” (‘Summary of Consultation Responses to the Design of Wales and Borders Rail Service Including Metro’ July 2017).
